Okay... So... Minecraft...

For those who have been out of the loop (like me) for a while, this thing has hitten the HUGE time.

Its a game developed by one dude, who decided he would release the game for sale in alpha (which in layments terms - is EARLY). If you purchase the game in alpha you can get it for half price and all updates and things are free.

Okay, so, what is the game?

In very brief terms, it is a First person.... Crafting game?

In a very Zelda style 2d graphics. the entire world is done in 1 metre square blocks which just look so very cute.

you start having nothing, and basically you work your way up. get some wood, make the wood into planks, planks to sticks, sticks to tools, tools to get more stuff (sand, rock, Iron, Gold, Diamond).

And basically... you do what you want.

As a self confessed achievement whore, it takes a LOT to drag me off my 360.

I bought this game, and absolutely loved it. so far ive sunk about 30+ hours in under 2 weeks.

If you have some imagination, its worth it.

Oh, but download a save backup (available at the minepedia), as they have had some server attacks recently.

Oh, and btw. the thing runs on ANYTHING.
I tested it on my dads netbook and it ran smooth as butter.

Anyway, I'm trying to set up a multiplayer server at the moment (thats right!!!) so that anyone who wants can play together with me.

Me, sheepy and shroomy have been playing this for a while. We're on sheepy's friend's server.

I'm curious... how many of you are still playing minecraft?

As of right now I have just been playing in my own world once in a while but I would like to join someone's server.

My internet (in my room) just got shut off here, or I'd start a project up with ya. Don't really feel like paying $150 a month for worse than dial-up again, especially since I should start moving out of the barracks and back into the tents in a couple of weeks. Once I get back (about 2 months, maybe more for internet setup), I'd be willing to start hosting a world 24/7 if there is any interest.

I was talking to Sheepy and Carlos about setting up an Ashtear MC server a while - I won't be able to join in until I get internet back, but if there's a strong enough interest I'd be willing to cover the server costs if someone could set up everything and do general maintenance.

If I knew how to set it up I would. Maybe I will have to find out how.

I was actually running a server off of my laptop here for a couple of weeks. I don't think a dedicated server is really necessary. The server software is easy to use, just download and run. There is some set up if you don't want a GUI, but its pretty simple and the instructions are on the site.

Gogo ashtear server! I'm dying to play this online with friends, seeing as there is almost never someone online on sheepy's friend's server and it's also offline for unknown time.

This looks very very interesting! Unfortunately about halfway into the game footage that Pablo posted, I started to feel a little sick. I tend to feel that with quite a few older styled games for some strange reason (I can't even play Morrowind anymore!!)

If my stomach could handle this, I would play, as I love the whole concept of it. Exploring, making things, building things! Awesome T_T

For those who are (still) interested, I have a small and very private server up. It's whitelist only because I don't ever plan on extending it past the Ashtear group. PVP is disabled so you don't have to worry about people killing you with shovels :>

Don't be a dick, or don't mess with other people's creations unless they say it's cool
No PVP which.. is already disabled
No hacking/Bug Exploiting/Client hacking Ex: flyer.jar, x-ray textures hacks, time-hacked block destroying
Try not to do anything that messing with server performance like spamming lava/water, leaving items on the floor (if you need to get rid of items, make an incinerator or something) but leaving items on the floor without being picked up messes with server performance
No looting (should go along with not being a dick)

I'm pretty sure I couldn't help myself when it comes to being a dick to shroomy. I'd have too much fun randomly replacing single cobblestone blocks in his structures with dirt patches.

Lexy, I enjoy that half of your server ground rules are only there due to failure on the part of the minecraft designers. lol

srsly, though, I might pick up minecraft.

lol shiin, it's so easy to break stuff like you would not believe. Server has to be restarted like twice a day on an average load (~4 people on) or else chunks start to go missing and people start lagging like the shits.

lol... seriously? It fucks up with ~4 people on? That's so lame lol

but still, I might pick up minecraft... when I have money D:

The empty patch of land above Lexy's ice cream cone tower is going to be Grand Central Station for a mine cart Transit that me and Basil are going to construct. Also my house is bigger underground.

I think I'll downsize my plans for my kickass fortress. Finish up the wall and the ground, and then go all Roald Amundsen and find a kickass patch of land to settle my future city.

I'm going to hijack this thread to post updates about the server. If it gets too messy I'll bother Allu or Racky or someone to split it into a separate thread :>

Updates and notices!
1. Server status
I take down the server pretty sporadically to do changes; the server management tool that I use feels the need to update itself/all its plugins pretty much every other day, and for a lot of them, in order to download the new patches I need to restart the server a couple of times for it to download and then for it to take effect (and then another 40 times for me to fuck around with the plugin). Since the server is up 24/7 with the exception of these times, if you try to log in and are faced with a server offline message, chances are you're trying to log in when I'm mucking around with it. Please idle in #magnolia-mc to get server status! It's also a great deal more helpful when trying to reach me because I've forgotten to add you to one of the whitelists (that happens a lot :<) (also Iges I'm looking at you)

2. Taralis has been added to list of mods! Don't piss him off because he has the power to kick/ban! :>

3. Added /pingme and /list commands.
/pingme gets your ping from the server. Note: This takes like 40 years for it to register, so give it a minute (or two, or three) to get a response. (I'm not sure why, I've left a note for the developer to figure out) Edit: Has been removed by developer :< now you'll have to manually ping the server if you want to see it. Edit2: Recovered from backup, screw the developer >:V Edit3: Removed again. Manually ping ok :>
/list gets list of currently connected players. If you're in irc .players also works.

4. Alternate IP things
So I didn't actually know about this til tonight because I'm a terrible admin, but you can actually log in via a couple of different hostmasks instead of having to write down the IP.
Here's a list of the different urls you can use to login:
lilac.pfak.org
minecraft.astaroth.org
mc.astaroth.org

Don't ask why there's 3 (or 4 if including the IP), it's mainly due to the fact that I'm lazy and Peter likes to make fun of me about it. :<
