Depends where you go I suppose. Some of the more "rural" areas are very twee, and still think thatch is the way forward. On the subject of thatched rooves, did you know that the phrase "raining cats and dogs" comes from there? In days of yore, when thatched rooves were the norm, when it got cold and/or rained a lot, the family pets would often climb up into the rooves of their houses (the peals reached quite far down to the ground, making it relatively easy to access). Sometimes, if it rained particularly hard, or if the animals wriggled about a bit too much, then they would fall through the roof, hence the term "It's raining cats and dogs."
